Built on the site of the old Alcazar Real (Royal Fortress), the Royal Palace contains innumerable collections and works of art; particularly outstanding are the Throne Room, the Banquet Hall and the Salon Gasparini. Also worth seeing are its various museums. Hours: 9:00 - 18:00 Monday to Saturday; Sundays from 10:00 - 14:30. Closed during official functions.

The Museo del Prado is one of the best art galleries in the world. It houses the most important collection of Spanish painting through the 19th century. In it we can admire masterpieces by Velazquez, El Greco, Goya, Murillo, Ribera and Zubaran, among others. In addition, it also contains a magnificent collection of Flemish and Italian art: Rembrandt, Rafael, Botticeli, Tintoretto, among others. Museum hours: 9:00 - 19:00 Tuesday to Saturday; Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00; closed Mondays.

This is an interesting museum that is full of artifacts from Spain’s colonization of the America’s. It is spread over 2 floors, and many pieces have been preserved since pre-historic times.

July 23 Reina Sofia Museum

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is a cultural center located on the Calle Santa Isabel in a former neoclassical - style hospital renovated in the 1980s’ to house the museum. Spanish contemporary art, as well as temporary exhibits, may be seen here. It also houses the treasures of the former Spanish Contemporary Art Museum and recently became the showcase of the famous painting Guernica by Picasso. Museum hours: 10:00 - 21:00 Monday to Saturday; Sundays from 10:00 to 15:00; closed Tuesdays.
