Madrid Study Abroad Program        

Accommodations are based on double occupancy with some triple rooms.  The number of triple rooms will depend on the circumstance and the number of rooms available in the hotel.  Single accommodations are available at a surcharge. The number of single rooms are limited.    Please note that the Barcelona and Lisbon excursions are conducted concurrently; therefore, choose only one.  Buffet breakfast is included daily.

Lisbon: July 12-15 ($380)

Day 1:  Depart for Lisbon at 8:00 a.m.  Stop in Mérida for lunch and visit the Roman ruins there.  Mérida was the capital of Lusitania during Roman times, and it is now one of the best preserved Roman ruins in the world.  Continue on to Lisbon.  Arrival around 17:00. Lodging at Hotel.  Rest of the evening free.

Day 2: Breakfast.  Board buses at 10:00 a.m. for tour of Lisbon with professional tour guide.  Lisbon was founded by the Phoenicians and is one of the largest ports in importance in Western Europe.  Some places included in the tour are: the Christian and the Arab neighborhoods which survived the tremendous earthquake (1755)  that almost destroyed the city, St. George's Castle, and below it, the Alfama neighborhood, the Monument to the Discoverers, honoring the sea explorers who made Portugal a world power in the 1500s,  the Maritime Museum, Praca do Comercio and the Rocio.  After the city tour enjoy the rest of the day sightseeing and/or shopping. Other interesting sights are Belem to the west of the city, including the famous Torre de Belem, alongside the Tagus river and the Mosterio dos Geronimos, started in 1501.

Day 3: Breakfast.  Board buses at 10:00 a.m. for trip to Cascais.  This town has evolved from an original fishing village during its early history to the present working international community and the "younger set" who enjoy the diverse and sophisticated nightlife.  Just outside the town is the famous Boca do Inferno in which the sea on rougher days hammers into the rock and creates a booming noise and a spectacular spray thus creating its name which means in English "mouth of hell".  Lodging.

Day 4: Breakfast.  Board buses at 8:45 a.m. and depart at 9:00 a.m.  Arrival around 18:00 in Madrid. 

Barcelona: July 12-15 ($380)

About Barcelona.  One of the most intersting places in Barcelona is La Rambla.  La Rambla is a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard packed with living statues, mimes and itinerant salespeople selling everything from lottery tickets to jewelry. The noisy bird market on the second block of La Rambla is worth a stop, as is the nearby Palau de la Virreina, a grand 18th-century rococo mansion, with arts and entertainment information and a ticket office. Next door is La Rambla's most colorful market, the Mercat de la Boqueria. Just south of the Boqueria the Mosaic de Miró punctuates the pavement, with one tile signed by the artist. The next section of La Rambla boasts the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the famous 19th-century opera house. Below the Plaça Reial, La Rambla becomes decidedly seedy, with strip clubs and peep shows. La Rambla terminates at the lofty Monument a Colon (Monument to Columbus) and the harbour. You can ascend the monument by lift. Just west of the monument, on Avinguda de les Drassanes, stand the Reials Drassanes (Royal Shipyards), which house the fascinating Museu Marítim. It has more seafaring paraphernalia than you'd care to wag a sextant at - boats, models, maps, paintings, ships' figureheads and 16th-century galleys.

Must See:  La Rambla, Barrio Gotico, Museo Picasso, La Sagrada Familia, and Montjuic.

The hotel is situated near "La Plaza de España" and by the train station Sants.
 It is about 10 minutes by metro to the city centre – La Rambla area.

Participants are housed in The Hotel Expo, a 4 star hotel, situated near "La Plaza de España". It has 435 guest rooms, fully equipped with color television. It has several dining rooms, an open air roof top swimming pool and solarium, and recreational rooms.

  • Day 1: Board buses at 8:15. Depart for Barcelona. at 8:30.  Arrival in Barcelona around 17:30.  Lodging at Hotel Expo. Evening free.  We suggest you take L3 metro to the centre of town where you can explore La Rambla, Barrio Gotico, and Port Vell.

  • Day 2:  Breakfast. Board buses at 9:45 and depart at 10:00 for a guided panoramic tour of Barcelona.  The tour of this beautiful city, the second largest in Spain, takes you to some memorable sights such as the Gothic Quarters, Las Ramblas, Gaudi's Holy Family Church, Montjuic, and the Pueblo Español.  Return to the hotel around 13:00.  Rest of the day free to explore on your own. Lodging at Hotel Expo.

  • Day 3: Breakfast.  Free day.  Optional panoramic tour of “La Costa Brava” with full day at the beach in Tossa de Mar.  This coastal pre-Roman town, with its Villa Vella surrounded by a 12th century fortified wall, makes it one of the most typical villages of Costa Brava. Lodging.

  • Day 4: Breakfast. Board buses at 8:45 and depart at 9:00 for Madrid.    Arrival in Madrid at 18:30.
